Blurring the line between ditzy and devilish, she sets out to marry off her friends – first her governess Miss Taylor (Greta Scacchi) and then young Harriet (Toni Collette). I mean, once we are married? In Sense and Sensibility there is a moment when Marianne is carrying on about the beauties of the countryside and Elinor says to her: ‘It’s not everyone who has your passion for dead leaves, Marianne.’ But in Persuasion, the protagonist, Anne Elliot, wanders around the countryside in the autumn and thinks about the beauties of autumn, and it’s taken absolutely seriously. That said, take this list with a grain of salt and don’t be too salty if we don’t see eye to eye. And I started reading up on the matter, and discovered the extraordinary brutality of the British army in that era. It’s a great book. Scholars have amply recorded and praised Bentley’s reprintings of Austen as “Standard Novels,” stressing their authority (that is, he paid for proper copyrights) and importance as Austen’s reputational turnkey. There’s just too much to learn, which is what makes my world go round. Royal A. Gettmann, the first chronicler of Bentley’s Standard Novels series, points out that “the expenditure on advertising was liberal” and costs high enough so that “the break-even point was about 3300 copies,” with average runs per title under 4,000.
