chris paul defense

He leverages every edge, and uses every angle to do it. This page details the records, statistics, and other achievements pertaining to Chris Paul NBA career statistics. Do that too often, and eFG% is bound to go up. Also, there are many times when Chris doesn’t even have the assignment of guarding the opposing point, like when he D’s up on Monta and not Baron in Golden State, or when he decides to shut down someone like Ben Gordon in the fourth quarter. Let me give you an example: let’s say against the starters Paul’s team plays defense rated a 6 on a 10 points scale (where 10 is good, 1 is bad).

And to his credit, he does lead the league in steals. Sixers podcast: Celtics sweep / blame to share / who gets fired. In this case, the thing varying is the player we try to measure. As you yourself stated, the obvious flaw is playing with worser or better defenders, but even adjusted it makes little or no sense. The fact that he plays around 40 minutes a game and has to continuously match up with guards like D-Will, Nash, Ellis, Kidd, Parker, etc.. makes any comparisons to East guards adjusted +/- null. The third thing I’m including, called iFG%, is the percentage of field goals a defender allows to be attempted 5 feet or closer to the hoop. http://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/kawhi-leonard-is-so-great-at-defense-hes-actually-hurting-the-spurs/. My logic was that fighting past screens is something a good defender *has* to be able to do. Deron williams, Baron Davis, Chauncey Billups would do the same. This is not a tell-all stat but it is one of the better ones we have to judge defense, and the numbers fly in the face of Doc’s hyperbole. But this “pure” +/- stat has many obvious flaws. Pure +/- is one of the stupidest stats out there, adjusted is not.

This chart also shows that Rajon Rondo’s defensive prowess may be somewhat overstated. | NBA Observer, great article, unbiased – using the facts, excellent, i think the stat of how much the opposing team scores while you’re on the floor isn’t the best for determining an individuals defensive prowess.

In terms of a statistical standpoint and evaluation, taking into account points in the paint and eFG% makes sense, but it doesn’t necessarily undermine the actual defense being played by CP3. That was just a rare case where he got matched with an undersized 2 guard who likes to take jumpshots instead of drive against the smaller player. Yeah, it looks pretty bad for Chris Paul. May 12, 2020 5:59 pm.

Actually, given the steals numbers he puts up, this doesn’t suprise me all that much. The podcast then transitions to the news of two big name coaches becoming available for hire.

This will be true no matter who he plays against. This is highly contradictory to what I expected- I thought that since Paul gets in the passing lanes so much, he would impact help defense way more than anything else.

Unlike a sport like baseball though, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.

The former league MVP shared that the Sixers’ high personnel turnover rate has not been helpful to the development of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

It’s NOT looking at how well a player performed against his opposition. Well, he shouldn’t have much trouble thinking of one for Chris Paul.

CP3’s D: How good is Chris Paul defensively? Thanks again. CP is relied upon as a scorer much more than the majority of the other PG on your list. As the years have gone on I have learned to take All-Defense votes with a considerable pinch of salt. While it does mean he isn’t the greatest defender, I still don’t agree with your statement “Chris Paul has been pretty darn awful at defense”.

You didn’t really have to do all these calculations to figure out he is a bad defender.

A negative number is a good thing (less points are given up when they play) and a positive number is a bad thing (vice versa). Chris Paul is likely to be on the trading block, and the 76ers would become a top contender should Elton Brand make the right moves. Defensive +/- is basically looking at how many points a team allows with Player X on the court versus how many points that team allows without Player X on the court. And Paul has next to no chance of containing the bigger, athletically freakish Westbrook, who blew by him off the dribble time and again in the 2014 Conference Semifinals: Westbrook was arguably the MVP of the series, averaging 28 points and 9 assists on 49% shooting and thoroughly outplaying Paul in the crucial Game 5. He is an intelligent player with great anticipation and a generally clear awareness of his own positioning on the floor, making him an excellent off-ball defender.

He forced him into two uncharacteristic 7-turnover games and made it difficult for him to find open looks by consistently fighting over screens and getting up in Curry’s chest on the perimeter: The fact Paul was trusted to guard Curry is testament to him.

The “External factors” would be the teammates. Once you’ve performed the necessary adjustments, you can look at a lineup of player X and 4 other “average” players versus that same lineup with another average player replacing player X. Sparing you the ugly math, here’s a table showing the top point guards in adjusted defensive +/ (how many points given up when they’re on the court minus how many points given up when they’re not on the court). This week on the podcast, we discuss Ben Simmons' first team All-Defense appearance, the Sixers' search for a new head coach, and Chris Paul. When he leaves, these characteristics leave. Ummmm…simplifying: okay, so, against Detroit for example, you may have seen that Chris Paul + starters give up 16 points in 6 minutes, and Chris Paul + backups limit them to 8 in the next 6 minutes.

But I totally didn’t remember the Ben Gordon thing till you said it, and so I’m sure I forgot some more. ( Log Out /  But regardless, I refuse to admit Chris is a bad defender.

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Matisse Thybulle emerged as a key defender this season and often found his way onto the court due to …

Here the Pelicans’ Darius Miller rises up over him with ease: According to Basketball-Reference’s advanced stats, Paul’s teams throughout his career have given up more points per 100 possessions when he is on the floor than when he is off it. Is he that good on that end of the ball? Wow, so how long does measuring adjusted +/- take?

This chart provides no reassurance. I point out these shortcomings to stress that his reputation as a good defender is only partly accurate. On the instances he’s too far (see the Fisher shot Friday), the point guard gets a clean look at a jumper.

If you think about it though, I’m ok with his defense being a bit weak at this stage of his career. Trust me, it’s ugly. From what I’ve seen of Kobe and Garnett’s defensive numbers, they’re both among the best in the league for their positions. Perhaps he does gamble occasionally with the steal and that accounts for that slight increase in eFG%, but that alone does not make Chris a “bad” defender at all. The adjusted +/- statistics, if you remember, use no box score stats (everything is derived purely from points scored). Who would have thought that one of the benefits of getting Jason Kidd to help the offense is that the Mavs defense would improve? Devin Vassell unveiled a shocking change to his shooting motion, J.J. I see what you’re saying about Chris Paul being undersized/not as strong as his competition. Per 100 Poss. Thanks for listening to our Sixers discussion this week.
From there, the pod turns to a comment that Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant shared on J.J. Redick’s podcast. Chris Paul, the greatest floor general in the league on offense, has been named to the All-Defensive first or second team six of the last seven years.
