New York and Oslo-based writer/director Mona Fastvold made her directorial debut with “The Sleepwalker,” which unlocked secrets between two sisters and made a splash in 2014 at Sundance.
Was that the starting point for you as well? Finney, we learn, keeps a record of Tallie’s every move: where she goes, how long she stays. Adding to his indignity, Finney has a wife, Tallie (Vanessa Kirby), who is so obviously his superior: a flame-haired beauty with a sharp, dancing wit (and, it must be noted, a wardrobe she wouldn’t possibly be able to afford on her husband’s meagre wage). In this, her second appearance in this year’s Venice competition, Kirby gives a fine, charismatic turn as the free-spirited Tallie.

Fastvold’s framing, too, often isolates the pairing within the frame to give them a world of their own, a world in which only the other exists. When I read it I had this rare moment where I felt I just knew how to solve the puzzle of it all. Tallie is equally stuck in a dead-end marriage with Finney, a harsh and jealous man, and the connection she and Abigail share illuminates both their lives and stokes a fire that is set ablaze as the seasons turn hotter. I could stare at its dense forest landscapes all day, which is essentially what the film’s characters do. “You are my city of joy,” Abigail writes of Tallie, and it is this joy that explodes off the screen through Waterston’s and Kirby’s superb performances. What is interesting in this love story is that it is a tale of queer love, but there is an absence of sin or shame because neither Abigail nor Tallie has any framework of such love in their lives. So perhaps the hapless Finney only has a short lease on Tallie as well. She has directed music videos for several musicians, most notably ex-husband Sondre Lerche.

Fastvold spoke to Variety about the choices she made in bringing “the dream of these two women” to the screen. He started composing before we started shooting, and then he also came with us on set and took a lot of inspiration from our surroundings.

I want the voice-over and the music to really speak to one another, and to be completely integrated. Variety and the Flying V logos are trademarks of Variety Media, LLC. Much of Abigail’s interior world is given through voice-over dialogue, as Waterston reads from Abigail’s journal filled with eloquent prose that suggests a great writer is tucked away on this New York dairy farm. And then I would be like: ‘Okay, this is where we are going to play a pause.’ Or ‘This is where we can have a cut, or a camera movement.’. But seldom have they been put together in such an achingly piercing portrait of love and female interiority as in Mona Fastvold’s The World to Come, a story of two women drawn to each other in a way that drowns out their previous loveless existence. Venice 2020: ‘Fair and very cold’, was the winter leading into the year 1856, as it’s plainly described in her diary by Abigail, the protagonist of Mona Fastvold’s The World to Come.

Every time the two come together the frame brightens up, a notable difference from when they are around their respective husbands, and DP Andre Chemetoff puts all the warmth and depth he can find in the 16mm format to use, making for a visually sumptuous and richly toned film (a shot late in the film of Tallie writing in the warm, bright light of a window particularly evokes a Vermeer painting). This wonder and excitement at finding a new person you fall in love with and the giddy happiness it brings is central to the story, Abigail’s and Tallie’s sexuality much less so. Daniel Blumberg’s score, his first, complements all of this by navigating between gentle and cacophonous without ever becoming overbearing. [2], She married Norwegian musician Sondre Lerche in 2005. That she might love someone else is almost the least of her crimes. “There is something going on between us that I cannot unravel,” she says. Her ambitious followup “The World to Come” stars Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby as two farmers’ wives in 1856 Upstate New York who fall in love but have no template, no reference points as to how to handle their emotions. All of a sudden we would hear it in the scene, and then we took that and kept a lot of that, and expanded on it in the score as well. But it’s Waterston’s quieter, more calibrated performance that holds the film together – and her poetic narration that shapes our sense of the tale.
