I'm not sure what that was meant to be about. Apparently Grant's favorite role and one of only two that got him an Oscar nod. When an itinerant reluctantly returns home to help his sickly mother run her shop, they are both tempted to turn to crime to help make ends meet. The initial narration, a touch overdone, gives a tantalising glance at future events that never appear in the film.

It's reach far exceeds its grasp, but it's a rare Hollywood film of the time that cogently focuses on the ills of the working-class and, in that respect at least, is quite worth a viewing. Sight & Sound magazine. Set in the working class section of pre-world war II London, and written and directed by famous playwright Clifford Odets, it is an homage to the strength of love and the power of the human spirit, even in the face of poverty, ignorance and the lure of crime as the only means to pay the rent.

Directed by Clifford Odets. (uncredited). A couple's big dreams give way to a life full of unexpected sadness and unexpected joy. Jane Wyman stars as the girl across the street who loves Ernie, and understands his spriit, but is incapable of leaving her "safe" life. With Odets directing, he really got a great piece of work from all who were in it. .
His mother is ill and needs his help to run her business, but can they both stay on the right side of the law?The Cockney accents were, refreshingly, not overdone which makes a change for films of this period, and the 'romance' (not sure that's the right word!)
Cary Grant, for those who love him as the romantic leading man in light comedies, plays one of his few serious roles and is brilliant as Ernie Mott; a man who does not want to run with the "hounds" or the "hares" but prefers to try to extricate himself from being either a victim or predator. A lot of his work has not aged well because he is so obsessively committed to discussing his political and social beliefs that he forgets to give us well rounded characters and turns them into mouthpieces. Still, there's a core of decency in Ernie.
A poor London boy joins a smash and grab raid to help his mother with cancer. Ethel Barrymore, as his ailing and cynical mother, is heartwrenching as she faces the reality that she is going to die and that her pawnshop may have to sell stolen goods if she is to have anything left to give her son.
I did like the sight and sound of Cary Grant in an ostensibly English setting, slumming it even, and surrounded by other ostensibly English people.

I do like it ultimately cause it’s definitely not your average rko ending certainly not an average WB or MGM one, but it just surprised Me, they tried to make it seem like shit would be better with that little ending music but nah this is a sad Russian….
