Shut Up and Sing I only saw Shut Up and Sing, the Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck documentary about the Dixie Chicks, a few days ago. Considering what countless millions of others have thought about President Bush, as a political statement viewed today, this is pretty lame. The irony was that a country which theoretically embarked on a trillion-dollar mission to bring democracy to Iraq was spooked by an off-the-cuff, rather dim-witted, slightly amusing comment from a country-and-western singer. A documentary on female journalists working in combat zones. The Guardian, a major English newspaper, published Maines' statement as simply "Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas. However, I walked away loving these girls and their music AND for what they stand for.
To be willing to stand unprotected in front of thousands of people and sing your songs despite such a threat takes courage, and it is a brave defense of American values, although their critics cannot see it that way.
Rednecks stirred up by right-wing radio hosts drove their gas guzzling mini-trucks across piles of Dixie Chicks CDs. They write and record “Taking the Long Way,” a new album in which, far from apologizing, Maines sings “Not Ready to Make Nice.” It is some of their best work, freeing them from the confines of country, but the album doesn’t sell like their earlier work.

It’s immediately apparent that sales in the South are weak, and so the itinerary is changed to take the group across Canada. The documentary shows what a tight-knit group the Chicks are. The Dixie Chicks are forced to reassess their career and public image. As for Natalie Maines’ timing, maybe she simply made the mistake of being premature.
When we see them slobbering and apologizing for having felt shame at sharing George Bush’s statehood on feel-good daytime TV shows like “The View,” Kopple and Peck NEVER follow this up with questions.
