You are haunted!
Their time at Hill House, at least during the day, feels like a leisurely vacation at a summer home, complemented by the wonderful cooking of old Mrs. Dudley. It’s. The novel centers on Eleanor Vance, a painfully naive young woman who has spent the last decade of her life caring for her invalid mother and has, as a result, spent very little time in the "real" world. She lives in the woods.
However, unlike Theo and Luke, who are both just looking for a summer fling, Eleanor is looking for her happily ever after. The Haunting of Hill House unfolds with horrible inevitability. They heard no pounding, and it seems that the house wished to separate them. Like these kiddos, she’s been through, Finally, Theo is the show’s only typical “middle sibling.” Nell and Luke are the youngers; Steven and Shirley, the olders. Later on in the episode, Nell awakens in the funeral home basement, as if the effects of Hill House were bleeding out into the real world. Stories of its haunting have circulated for a long time and it cannot seem to be lived in or rented for more than a few days before the inhabitants leave inexplicably.
The companion won but the younger sister hounded her until she eventually committed suicide; it is said she hanged herself in the tower rafters. It’s a conventional happy ending, yes: But it was earned. She climbs the rickety staircase and feels intoxicated.
She desperately longs for a home and a life of her own.
The behavior, thoughts and feelings of these two women eerily echo the relationship between the Crain sisters, two little girls who grew up in Hill House decades ago.
She delights in every moment, daydreaming and musing about what it might be like to live in some of the places she passes. Nell, like her mother years before, has taken her own life in Hill House. Hugh is off to supervise. When Dr. Montague notices how deeply ensnared Eleanor has become by the ghosts of the house, he insists that she leave for her own safety. Liv pushes her daughter from the ledge so she hangs herself.

However, the others in the home are not happy about the paranormal events, which are becoming more frequent and more terrifying. Symbols, metaphors, and allusions abound; characters’ thoughts and actions are rife with possible interpretations. The doctor and Luke see something like a dog running through the halls. Everyone is looking forward to their adventure and they spend their time together convivially. During the first night of the epic slumber party, Dr. Montague informs his three assistants of Hill House's terrifically terrifying past. Some of his children are more receptive than others. This episode, we inch closer to the events of that one Last Night — Liv’s last day alive, and the Crains’ last night in Hill House. This episode marks a turning point for the season. Don’t tell your wife you want kids, when you don’t ever want kids! Now an adult, Luke is, once again, living in a house with unusual quirks and particularities.
He refers to troubling rumors about the house, hoping to catch the imagination of just the right sort of assistant. Eventually, the Dudleys had another child. The house passed from owner to owner until it ended up in the Sandersons’ possession, though they never resided there.
Dr. Montague’s character is based on the Dr. Montague in Shirley Jackson’s book, who leads the expedition into Hill House.

Not only does Hugh realize the house is haunted — he realizes it’s affecting Liv, big time. The current owner of Hill House convinces Dr. Montague to take her nephew, Luke, off her hands for a while.
