Director-screenwriter: Michael Cristofer The Night Clerk shows his frustration at not knowing how to act and it’s hard not to get upset when Johnny says he suspects Bart in part because he mistakenly believes that autistic people are prone to violence. De Armas is warmly appealing as the potential love interest, and Helen Hunt makes a strong impression as Bart's mother, who will do anything to protect her "fragile" son who spends most of his time in the basement. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). And Sheridan and de Armas’s scenes together leave an impression long after the rest of the movie evaporates. A thriller makes a spying hotel clerk who happens to be on the autism spectrum its prime suspect in a murder. Honestly, this new movie is nothing like any of these movies. Ostensibly, The Night Clerk presumes to be a thriller about a hotel clerk who accidentally witnesses the murder of one of his guests and winds up becoming a suspect himself, although there's little about it that feels suspenseful. But while knowing someone’s secrets can be fun, knowledge can also be a burden. This is only his fifth movie as a director and the first since Original Sin from 2001. Sheridan and Armas have great chemistry, managing to be both awkward and endearing in their interactions.
As a result, Bart’s lack of tact becomes the movie’s main source of humor. Also of note is Helen Hunt as Bart’s mother, Ethel, who is fiercely protective of her son. The lure of learning other people’s secrets is just too great. For sure, it wasn’t high budget, nor was it a cinematic masterpiece, but it was a psychological thriller that was gripping, suspenseful and thought-provoking throughout.
