the night clerk review

Espada’s concern than ours. All rights reserved. When things take a turn toward the violent, Bart rushes back to the hotel. He manages to utilize common characterizations of people with Asperger’s, such as not looking people in the eye or stimming without exaggerating them. While growing close to another guest named Andrea Rivera (Ana de Armas), he must prevent her from being the next victim, while also unmasking the real killer. He has certain stock phrases that he repeats in conversation with the same cadence no matter the context, which gives an almost unnatural feel to his interactions with people. De Armas elicits sympathy for the enigmatic Andrea, whose kindness, straightforwardness, enhance her appeal. Played with whetted concern and a drawn mouth, Hunt depicts a woman who loves, protects, and stymies her 23-year-old son. In terms of the acting, as previously mentioned, the two leads were pretty unknown but pulled off two fantastic performances, respectively. In “The Night Clerk,” Tye Sheridan and a very busy Ana de Armas star as a hotel clerk with Asperger’s and the solicitous beauty who shows up after a murder. He works nights at a hotel near his home and in his off hours he practices. Directing his first film since his ill-received 2001 Angelina Jolie-starring melodrama Original Sin, Cristofer (also a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, for 1977's The Shadow Box) seems unsure of what he wants to achieve. Sheridan delivers a sincere, studied performance. Still, how you feel about Sheridan’s approach may depend on how much you trust films that attempt to get into the skin of unusual protagonists.

In other words, enjoy the good acting and you should be well entertained. The Night Clerk is a new movie on Netflix starring Tye Sheridan along with Ana de Armas, Helen Hunt, John Leguizamo, and Johnathon Schaech. Despite featuring a murder and a protagonist who records people without their consent, this is a story about loneliness and connection. Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. Unfiltered truth-telling is among the traits of Asperger’s and scenes of Bart eschewing the niceties are played for tenderness as well as laughs.

Whenever new films appear on your Netflix feed, it’s always best to approach them with caution, and that’s exactly what I did here with The Night Clerk. Liked it? Production designer: Diane Millet Whether it’s Bart saying that asking how he is is a “complicated question and the answer would take a long time” or a shopping montage where he insults salespeople who try to help him, the audience is meant to find his inability to read the room to be funny. When Bart gets home, he watches as she lets a man in from the garden-level door. Costume designer: Jacqueline Johnson In the film’s production notes, writer-director Michael Cristofer (whose list of awards include a Pulitzer and Tony as well as an Emmy) mentions a nephew who has Asperger’s. Most of the plot centers on the relationship between Bart and Andrea with the crime elements being relegated to Johnny’s subplot until the climax. All of them deliver really good performances, but this movie is mostly about Tye Sheridan’s character. De Armas gives Andrea a sense of vulnerability without being portrayed as “broken.” Leguizamo does a great job as an antagonist who is unwilling to work with Bart’s communication style and his aggression is a hindrance to the investigation.
Director-screenwriter: Michael Cristofer The Night Clerk shows his frustration at not knowing how to act and it’s hard not to get upset when Johnny says he suspects Bart in part because he mistakenly believes that autistic people are prone to violence. He works to avoid eye contact — especially with women. Det. Also, he works as a night clerk (hence the title) at a hotel. De Armas is warmly appealing as the potential love interest, and Helen Hunt makes a strong impression as Bart's mother, who will do anything to protect her "fragile" son who spends most of his time in the basement. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). And Sheridan and de Armas’s scenes together leave an impression long after the rest of the movie evaporates. A thriller makes a spying hotel clerk who happens to be on the autism spectrum its prime suspect in a murder. Honestly, this new movie is nothing like any of these movies. Ostensibly, The Night Clerk presumes to be a thriller about a hotel clerk who accidentally witnesses the murder of one of his guests and winds up becoming a suspect himself, although there's little about it that feels suspenseful. But while knowing someone’s secrets can be fun, knowledge can also be a burden. This is only his fifth movie as a director and the first since Original Sin from 2001. Sheridan and Armas have great chemistry, managing to be both awkward and endearing in their interactions.

As a result, Bart’s lack of tact becomes the movie’s main source of humor. Also of note is Helen Hunt as Bart’s mother, Ethel, who is fiercely protective of her son. The lure of learning other people’s secrets is just too great. For sure, it wasn’t high budget, nor was it a cinematic masterpiece, but it was a psychological thriller that was gripping, suspenseful and thought-provoking throughout.
