Their lives take very different turns but deep down they stay intertwined and I loved it. When I started reading, my mental picture of Brazil could not have been more different than what I found in this amazing story. However, the headman is able to appreciate music just like the rest of the villagers, and is part of the gently comic scene where Luo lies about the title of a Mozart sonata. This could have been a little shorter, but I enjoyed the stories of sisters Luzia and Emilia and the divergent paths life had in store for them, set against the backdrop of Brazil in the 1920s and 1930s. The narrator and Luo are sent to the country for re-education.
The contrasting realities of the two sisters are brilliantly told.
