Issa Rae’s appearance punctuates the parade of whiteness, though her character does little more than provide lip service to diversity of perspective. Midler is always a pro, of course, and she’s called on to display a lot of range in a short period of time. Sitting in an expansive living room decorated in cool, tasteful whites and grays, Callie video chats with an old friend from boarding school to tell her a story about the president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, who had been their classmate. But then his monologue takes a detour to call out Vice President Mike Pence for his anti-gay stances over the years, and adding this political element feels like a contrived, wedged-in effort to provide cohesion with the other tales. Coastal Elites wears its heart on its political sleeve, and the disdain for President Trump and all that he represents in this HBO special is searing and palpable.

The turn isn't unwarranted, necessarily — Pence's anti-LGBTQ work is well documented, and surely factors into the way lots of LGBTQ people think of their own work. It's the opportunity of a lifetime for an actor who's lost out on parts for being too, ahem, "sophisticated," and yet Mark feels uneasy playing up his queerness at the behest of a straight studio exec imagining a mostly straight audience. But strictly from a dramatic standpoint, Roach, Rudnick and their stars have coped with it beautifully, in a production that probably won't leave like-minded viewers feeling any less tired, but which does a splendid job of reminding them why. There’s an ostensible argument to be mounted that Rudnick considers this an edifying satire pitched to the unconvinced. Coastal Elites has nothing nice to say about Trump. Issa Rae in “Coastal Elites.” The film sometimes teases the faults of its subjects, with the occasional concession of mild snobbiness or light self-absorption. Creating best-seat-in-the-house intimacy, Roach has let his extraordinary cast do the heavy lifting, employing modest edits and spare backgrounds to showcase their performances, adding to their rawness and power.
In this capacity, by the basic functioning of art, Rudnick and Roach have failed.
