Hipcamp makes it easy to find unique camping experiences. In winter, visitors can cross-country ski and snowshoe on trails and enjoy the season's beauty. The glaciers that dominated the area a few thousand years ago have left huge boulders and debris that remained when the ice melted. A public boat launch ramp, operated by the Truckee Donner Recreation & Parks District is available in the northwest corner of Donner Lake. Annual passes are available to purchase in Visitor Center. Swimming at Donner Beach is a truly refreshing experience (especially on a hot summer day). There are three cross country skiing trails, ranging from easy to strenuous, and two snowshoeing trails ranging from 2-3 miles. The campsites aren't particularly spread out, but what they lack in privacy they make up for in proximity to the lake. All food, beverages, and toiletries are required by law to be stored in provided food lockers. Don’t be fooled by the sunshine sparkling off the lake’s surface though, the water here is chilly (it is the mountains, after all). Maps are for sale at the Donner Memorial Visitor Center. Donner Lake is a great place to launch your kayak or canoe and leave land behind you for a while. From the South or West our Campground can be accessed by taking Northwoods Boulevard from Donner Pass Road.
