The Korean crime-drama “Stranger” is engrossing. Every character is perfectly written, with enough nuance and depth to make their interactions memorable. I have never written reviews about a drama/film/song and whatnot before but upon completion of this Drama, I felt compelled to say a little, at least something about it. There’s a lot of talking. Meantime, my car was repossessed, and my wife ran off to join the circus.

I normally get bored with dramas where the foe is known and its a matter of episodes before the lead figures out what I already knew. But of course, Strangers From Hell isn’t a fairyland and it doesn’t tell a story about nice people doing nice things. He actually said a lot with just his eyes, and I found it interesting that we were able to look into his thought processes as it was narrated at times as compared to Yeo Jin who verbalized it during the series. There’s no romantic sub-plot or the usual tropes you’d expect, save for some late-season drama that tackles political ideas we’ve seen many times before. Aside from this, it is a good mystery thriller, as it keeps you guessing and double guessing things, clues, and even the characters themselves all the way until the end. It’s amazing how invested you get in what seems a simple conversation until two episodes in, you realize that there’s layers under layers under layers of meaning. Regarding the main mystery itself, I loved paying attention to every detail so that I could try to connect the dots and solve things on my own. The title “Stranger” ultimately refers to Si-Mok himself. Also, the cinematography and the production value of “Stranger” was some of the best I have seen to date! However, in the end, even though he did try to do good, as Si Mok says, it still doesn’t excuse the fact that he did have people murdered in the name of justice. Also, there was less emphasis on the romance this time around, and the plotting, for a Korean drama, wasn’t as slow or draggy at all, but still allowed for some time to properly flesh out the characters that we are supposed to care about.

Last month, as I was looking over the list of things I’ve reviewed and watched in the past year, I realized that I hadn’t watched as much Korean dramas as I wanted to, despite the fact that Netflix has been distributing a lot of them as of late.
And theres lovely subtle humour too, stemming from the interaction between the two leads, who couldn't be more different. It’s this level of depth and thoughtful writing that ultimately makes Stranger such a good drama.
