As a sci-fi geek, Gravity naturally ticks all the boxes that I expect from a sci-fi film and reminds me why I fell in love with the genre in the first place. Surprisingly, the tense and entertaining story holds up pretty well on the 2D TV screen as well. Add to that a story that never relents with suspense and emotional intensity and you have a remarkable movie.The idea of being under constant stress, worrying for your main characters, should not be new if you know the director Alfonso Cuaron's previous major film, "Children without Men." Gravity is my favourite film of all time, everyone who knows me knows that I adore this film, I physically cannot find a flaw. There are few moments (memorable ones, like Bullock's tears) where the dimensional aspects come forward. The vast majority of the film on this blu ray appears flat. Who's the man Stone talks to while in the Soyuz? Gravity defines itself as one of the best thrillers, dramas, and space adventures to ever set foot in the film industry, and it, along with its brilliant director, deserves a thunderous round of applause. The camera continues its approach, getting in on her helmet with reflections, and her face, and then finally her eye (yes that close), and with an incredibly deft wide angle swing we are in her head, looking out at the spinning universe, listening to her panic. It takes a really long time, it happens without a single break (which means you are given no emotional escape), and it's both gorgeous and taut with terror. There is also one scene where the camera moves slowly towards bullock's character and then (still in the same shot) goes through her helmet to see her point-of-view...it's just genius. Very nice images in 3d. So if you haven't seen Gravity, go out to the shop, but the 3D Blu-ray, but a massive TV with surround sound and enjoy it. But Cuaron also knows how suspense works. What else is there to say? I really hate the restrictions they are putting on these codes. The fact he won the Oscar for best director just proves all of this. But the film basically uses the 3-D effects to enhance what is already there, nothing more. A washed-up superhero actor attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production. It's a technical marvel -- appropriately breathtaking in its evocation of space's vastness and the buffeting suffered by the two astronauts in their efforts to anchor themselves to something solid.
