I was gung ho and ready to give this a 7/10 because the character of Sarah made smart choices, maintained a surprising sense of calm, and just generally impressed me.
How much will you pledge? Maybe. Teethbrushes. What could have been a really interesting portrayal of the disintegration of a relationship because of paranoia, isolation and distrust is quickly shat down the drain in favour of one of the most obvious storylines I've seen in recent years (the identity of the "natives" is given out in the first ten minutes).
The couple is British. On the first night, they hear sounds from outside. But this film has no idea what it's trying to say and the final ten minutes damns it to a sub-average rating. Released against the political debates of independence raging in Scotland, it’s a relevant film. Trying to play into the whole Scottish Independence thing. The film is relatively tense until then, because the night shots are actually really crisp and well shot, but then, well. I just wanted to point that out because I probably would never watch a movie with a title as horrible as "White Settlers". This kinda thing can happen in reality!!! Highland pig foreshadowing attack. White Settlers plays like a masterclass in how to ratchet tension up to screaming pitch. First hour is solid, but then our protagonists turn into absolute idiots. That is what White Settlers is and fails to do. Most city-dwellers dream, at one time or another, of buying a house in the country and more and more of them have been able to realise it in recent years. Takes a fucking long time to decide that it's a home invasion movie. Rest assured, though, that once the scares start, they don’t let up. And when you consider how many of these houses end up being used as holiday or second homes, the rage that drives the pig-men gets easier to understand. It is hard to make a film with the plot "people move to an isolated house in the country and find out they aren't welcome" into something original. Nor are the pig-men ignorant yokels or clannish inbreds, they’re ruthlessly organised and actually more tech-savvy than Sarah and Ed. He is wearing a pig mask, like the captors, implying that the pig masked captors were Scottish and wanted the English out of their home.
Ian Fenton’s spare and effective script, first-class performances from Williams and – in particular – McIntosh, plus the Scottish (well, Peak District) landscape, all give Halligan the best possible materials to build with. Be awesome. Deciding to do a double bill of Pollyanna McIntosh films on Netflix was a poor idea it turns out. It will keep expanding.
