Unfortunately nothing special can be said about this movie. Obtain the DVD, which has an interview with him taken years later in which he answers certain questions about the film. I wasn’t expecting a Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator (which is the best in game tutorial ever) but come on. Shocked and traumatised, Goda goes on a desperate mission to find out why this happened, but what starts as a quest to find answers, soon turns into an obsession to get a hold of a firearm of his own. I saw this film at the Montreal FantAsia festival and came out puzzled by what I saw. Different from Tsukamoto's earlier movies, but still a great movie. There are too few of the patented strobing, kaleidoscopic sequences that have made Tsukamoto such a dynamic director for this to be considered one of his best; still, the scene where he brands himself with a hot iron before pistol-whipping himself into a killing frenzy is the kind of semi-sensual cinematic savagery that he does best and it singlehandedly saves this one. The bleak tale of grief ends with almost a positive note and a feeling that Goda has found some kind of peace in his middle of all the despair. Shot in intimate black and white, the graphic impact of its intense releases (There is a bit of animation on guns that's like a KMFDM video) hit you to hold you and keep you with the story until the end. Another example of tour de force film-making from Shinya Tsukamoto. Also I very like Roman Polanski works (Rosemary's baby, Tenant), Chan-Wook Park (Mr. vengeance, Oldboy...), Kim Ki-Duk (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter... and Spring ...). Bullet Ballet has a lot of depth to it and even is fun in short bursts but is let down by a dull story mode and annoying controls. Boss Rush mode on the other hand isn’t really a boss rush, but more of a mode that has the opponent start out launching a spell.
The vehemently obsessive way that Goda goes about trying to track down where Kiriko could have possibly gotten a gun from may seem a bit bizarre at first, but knowing that the only people who might have access to a handgun will almost certainly have something to do with criminal activity, makes his behaviour much more coherent. About 95% of Tsukamoto's movies talk about the body and mind relationship or a protagonist suffocating between Tokyo's cemented skyscrapers, and I was expecting he would tackle those subjects yet again in Bullet Ballet. BULLET BALLET falls somewhere between these two extremes. Enraged, obsessed and increasingly desperate Goda tries to obtain a gun from black market and find the yakuza he holds responsible. I thought the better known "A Snake Of June" was brilliant and provocative, but this film is also, even though they are hardly about the same thing. A pity, but I'm still looking forward to 'Gemini'... A stunning visual depiction of depression. TV commercial director Goda’s (Tsukamoto himself) quiet life is thrown out of course when his long-time girlfriend Kiriko (Kyôka Suzuki) suddenly commits suicide by shooting herself. Unlike the title would suggest, it offers very little in a form of gun violence, instead exploring themes of grief, isolation and obsession in Tsukamoto’s trademark style.
