The Marco Polo Bridge Incident was a conflict between the Republic of China's National Revolutionary Army and the Imperial Japanese Army.It is widely considered to have been the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945). Small numbers of both Japanese and Chinese soldiers were stationed near what in the West was called the Marco Polo Bridge, because the explorer had seen and described its predecessor, near the town of Wanping outside Beijing.

Most, however, still continued on into the 1940s when the Japanese entry into World War II and foreign agreements with China brought them to an end.
Both sides sent more troops to the area and early in the morning of July 8 Japanese infantry and armoured vehicles attacked the bridge and took it, but were driven off again. In 1931 they took over Manchuria altogether, before expanding south. In practical terms, this right extended only as far as Yichang until 1900, when advances in steam navigation allowed access as far inland as Chongqing.
