Maiuri uncovered the city's walls, and found a large necropolis along its southern walls - while his excavation of the Via di Nocera allowed him also to explore Regio I and Regio II. Fiorelli also took the topography of the town and divided it into a system of 'regiones', 'insulae' and 'domus' - and he developed the use of plaster casts to recreate the forms of plants and human bodies that had been covered by the volcanic ash, and had then left a hole - shaped in the form of the plant or person - in that ash after putrefaction.

The workshops and the shops immediately suggest the busy and noisy life once so much in evidence along the streets, and the religious sanctuaries are awesome even today - with monumental columns still emphasising the sacredness of the altars.

But the site uncovered could not, at that time, be identified.

"At the end of a day of intense mental processing and physical labor, when the tools are being packed up and put away for the night, I often take a moment to remind myself of that connection with the individuals whose homes and workshops we're digging up," he says. Elegant houses and elaborate villas lined the paved streets. Mount Vesuvius has not erupted since 1944, but it is still one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

When Pompeii was first discovered, wealthy young gentlemen were expected to embark on Europe-wide tours to learn the continent’s history. The Bourbons were overthrown, Italy was united, and an archaeologist, Giuseppe Fiorelli, was appointed director of excavations.

"Because of this, what we find in Pompeii is that every step in the development in the science of archaeology was tested out in Pompeii—with mixed results," he says. In Pompeii all is original: the tombs along the stone paved streets; the houses, with their frescoes - some with simple designs and gaudy colours, others more elegant and complex - which open onto shadowed arcades made precious by gardens in bloom and gushing fountains. It shot stone, ash and volcanic gases as high as 21 miles into the sky at tens of thousands of cubic metres every second.
The power of the explosion has been calculated as 100,000 times greater than the nuclear bomb which devastated Hiroshima in 1945 CE. But where did this tragedy occur and how many people perished? In the most recent years, excavations have been carried out outside the Porta Stabia, and also in Murecine, near the river Sarno, where the Hospitium dei Sulpici has been uncovered. Seismic activity, although not strong, increased dramatically in frequency. When a group of explorers rediscovered the site in 1748, they were surprised to find that–underneath a thick layer of dust and debris–Pompeii was mostly intact. Movable screens, often decorated with mythological scenes, separated rooms and in winter kept in the heat provided by braziers.

These take the form of thousands of electoral notices and hundreds of wax tablets, mainly dealing with financial transactions.

Although best known for its Roman remains visible today dating from AD 79, it was built upon a substantial city dating from much earlier times.

In the buildings of these towns - from the monumental to the most simple - the ancient world appears in all its complexity, with great clarity. Everyday objects and household goods littered the streets.

The wax of these tablets has long since melted but often impressions of the stylus have remained on the wooden backing. Vittorio Spinazzola, starting from around 1910, uncovered the Casa di Loreio Tiburtino, the Casa dell'Efebo, the Casa di Trebio Valente and Via dell'Abbondanza, which goes from west to east all along the length of the town. This research-driven programme is challenging many assumptions.

When was it discovered? Something was clearly not right. Today 44 of the 66 hectares of urban area are visible, and it is unanimously considered that the other 22 hectares must be left under the volcanic debris, in order to preserve this important part of our past for future generations. Experts believe that another catastrophic eruption is due any day—an almost unfathomable catastrophe, since almost 3 million people live within 20 miles of the volcano’s crater.

On the morning of 24th of August 79 CE (the traditional date, although a partial inscription discovered at the site in 2018 CE suggests the eruption was actually some time in mid-October) a tremendous bang signalled that the magma that had been building over the last thousand years had finally burst through the crater of Vesuvius.

The buried buildings of Pompeii were designed to last only a few decades - but are still standing after nearly 2000 years. Something more than names and figures has survived, however. It was terrifying–“I believed I was perishing with the world,” Pliny wrote, “and the world with me”–but not yet lethal: Most Pompeiians had plenty of time to flee. Pompeii, along with the neighboring town of Herculaneum and a number of villas in the area, was abandoned for centuries.

By the end of the 18th century, two wide areas had been uncovered: the Quartiere dei Teatri with the Tempio d'Iside, and the Via delle Tombe with the Villa di Diomede. Yet Devore is hopeful for Pompeii's future. But the disaster also preserved a slice of Roman life.
