But it is the relationship between Bepi and Shun Li that raises the ire of her Chinese employers and draws out the xenophobic hatred of the Chinese by some of the Italian men who frequent the pub. In letters to her son she explains that the word 'lagoon’ in Italian is female, calm and mysterious, while 'sea’ is male and restless.As they grow closer, she is warned by her roommate that their Chinese bosses don’t allow them to socialise with the locals and doing so could jeopardise her chances of reuniting with her son. They have found kindred souls and are linked by their regard for poetry. Venice is the most photogenic city in the world, but we don't see the familiar Venice. Besides, it insists on trying to create some visual and narrative poetry where there is none.
